Maya, age 7 1/2, smiles a lot more these days. That's because she has a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) who puts her first, no matter what.
Maya was removed from her home at age 6 when her mother, who suffers from mental illness, could no longer care for her and her older brother. Their father's whereabouts were unknown. Maya immediately bonded with her CASA who discovered Maya's interest in drawing and painting, and enrolled her in art classes to develop her talent. Recently, Maya was a finalist in the San Jose Public Library's Library Card Design Contest.
