Skylight's 1st Annual Fundraiser

Help Strengthen Human Rights Media!

We're inviting you to join us!

We are facing dark days ahead, and we have to strengthen our resolve and contribute to a stance of nonviolent resistance through art and cultural interventions. We need to go forward in solidarity! Your one-time or sustaining contribution will enable us to do our work, and if you choose to give a sustaining contribution we have a list of special rewards to the right.

About Skylight:

For over 30 years, Skylight has been committed to producing artistic, challenging and socially relevant media to strengthen human rights and the quest for justice. Through the use of media, technology and digital tools, we seek to engage, educate and increase understanding of human rights and social justice amongst the public at large, educators, and policy makers.

Over the past year, we have made a lot of changes. Skylight is now a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that is developing cutting-edge programs to engage human rights and social justice activists with filmmakers and artists to propel their stories. We hope that you will join us on this journey to expand our mission.

About our projects and programs:
  • We’ve just finished 500 YEARS, an inspiring story of the successful resistance by the Mayan people in Guatemala, bringing dictators to trial and corrupt leaders to prison. 500 YEARS will be released in early 2017.
  • To respond to the dark political currents we are all facing, Skylight will launch a global tour in 2017 of The Resistance Saga, an immersive cinematic event with all three films of the Mayan indigenous rights movement we’ve documented for over 35 years— When the Mountains Tremble (1983), Granito: How to Nail a Dictator (2011), and now 500 YEARS —with women leaders of the social justice movements in Guatemala that are protagonists in our films, as well as fast-rising Mayan protest singer/songwriter Sara Curruchich. Your donations will help us bring this event to your city.
  • BK@24FPS is our monthly screening series here in Brooklyn, where we’re based, which we are now going to host as a forum for short films that focus on movements of resistance, and how filmmakers and other artists can respond to unfolding events in these uncertain times. The discussion forum will include the filmmakers and activists and of course the audience, you!
  • SolidariLabs are designed to bring together filmmakers, artists and grassroots activists in a 5-day immersive experience, building regional networks of solidarity and cultural acts of resistance. This past October, we launched the first SolidariLabs in Colombia, bringing together a group of 24 Colombian filmmakers, artists and grassroots activists, all immersed in the struggle to build peace in their country. So far three projects have emerged from the group, focusing on creative approaches to reconciliation and how to shift cultural perceptions in a polarized society. We want to launch more SolidariLabs networks, here in the U.S., Latin America and anywhere else there is a need to strengthen movements of resistance. Help us make this happen!
  • Skylight Community began in August to create a space where we work and connect with other human rights media-makers to collaborate in the creation of short videos to shed light on issues facing our communities. As a result of our latest BK@24SPF event "Next Steps Now," we anticipate heavier demands for these collaborations. To view the shorts we have created so far, visit our YouTube channel.
