Piti Piti Zwaso Fe Nich Li

Dignity | Transformation | Growth

As you may know, I work for a small non-profit organization called SOIL that builds sustainable sanitation solutions in Haiti, or in other words, helps to ensure that people in some of the world's most vulnerable communities have access to a toilet that is safe, dignified, and beautiful.

I love working for SOIL because I believe in what we do, and I know that we operate with integrity and heart. What draws me to SOIL is the organization's commitment to closed-loop and local solutions. We do not bring in volunteers to do work that we could hire a local to do, as it's more important for us to provide stable jobs and livelihood opportunities than to save money by relying on volunteers. The waste from every single SOIL toilet (and many others!) is safely removed from human environments, treated and transformed into rich, beautiful compost that we use to restore nutrients to Haiti's vulnerable soils.

My favorite Haitian Creole proverb is "Piti piti zwaso fè nich li" or "Little by little the bird builds her nest". Hearing these words always gives me comfort, because it reminds me that we are all working to build our nests, no matter how old we are, where we live, or how we spend our time. I hope that you will join SOIL and me as we continue to build our nest, and as we work to share what we're building with as many people as possible. SOIL has been working in Haiti for ten years - help us celebrate this landmark anniversary by joining us and showing your support with a sustainable monthly contribution.
